LO2-Tak1,Codes and coventions

In this task I will be looking at the codes and conventions of news. I will be looking at two different news and looking at their codes and conventions. The two news programmes that I will be looking at are: BBC NEWS at 10’oclock and also 5 news.
Studio news reader- These are the people that sit in the studio and report the news on to the audience. The codes and conventions for studio news reader are very formal this means that they are seen wearing suites and smart clothing. In the BBC news and 5 news, the studio new reader are all dressed in a formal manner and they are wearing suites and look  very professional.

Also they are usually sat behind a desk where they will present the news. The fact that the studio news reader sit on the desk  will mean that their legs are covered and only they’re upper body is  shown, this then means that all the attention will be on the upper body  and nowhere else.  On BBC news the studio reader are sat behind a desk and only their upper body can be seen, this then means that the legs are not shown  and only the attentions  is on their upper body. However on 5 news the studio reader are not seen behind a desk as they are standing, this then means that all their body is shown and the focus is on their whole body and not just the upper body like the BBC news.

The studio reader will always make sure that they are facing the camera and are directly speaking to the camera and not looking around.  This makes it more professional and shows that the studio readers are talking directly to the public and makes the news look much more professional by making direct eye contact. The conventions that are used are that the studio reader will make sure that they formal and they look smart and professional. Also the studio news reader will always be sitting behind a backdrop of a city view or they are either sitting somewhere the studio can be seen.

Field reporters- These are the people that go out and report news from outside the studio. The codes for field reporters are that you will see the field reporters dressed formally depending on the weather and the location of the. For example if a field reporter is reporting from a park then the will be dressed more informal and they will be seen wearing shirts and shorts, this shows that the field reports is dressed appropriate for the location. This will also be done for field reporters for BBC news and 5 news as the field reports will be dressed appropriate for the location. For example if on BBC one of the field reporters is reporting from the House of Commons then they will be dressed in a very formal way and they will be wearing a suit. Also if the field reporter for 5 news is at an airport then they will be dressed more formal and they will look professional. The conventions that will be used will be that the field reporters will be on air and they will be shown live. All the field reporters for BBC news and 5 news are shown on air live and they will be speaking at that specific time back to the studio.  They will also have a direct mode of address, this means that they will be talking regarding what they are reporting on. For example if a reports is at tennis match they will have to discuss that matter and draw their attentions to the tennis game.
Links to studio- This is where link to the studio will be seen. This means that when field reporters are talking about the matter that they are reporting about and they finish then they will finish with the sentence ‘’back to the studio’’  This shows link to the studio, this also means and shows that the field reporter is live and they will be live on air. Also the studio will also make links to the field reporters and they will say ‘’over to you’’ this then means that the field report will then be able to speak and yet again shows that the field report is live and can hear the people in the studio and also the people in the studio can hear what they’re saying as well.  This is illustrated in both BBC news and also 5 news where after the field reporters are finished talking then they will say ‘’ back to the studio’’ this then shows how the filed reports have a link to the studio and this also show that the field reporters are live.
Modes of address to viewer- The codes of address are that the reports will need to make direct eye contact with the camera and that they are speaking directly to the camera, this then shows that all their attentions is towards the camera and are speaking directly to the audience. However if the reports isn’t facing the camera and  speaking directly to the camera then it means that the direct mode of address  isn’t there as the reporter isn’t speaking to the audience and there is no direct mode of address. In BBC news and 5 news the reporter make sure that they have direct mode of address by making sure that they face directly to the camera when they are speaking, this then shows that the reporters are speaking directly to the audience.
Interviewing- The codes that will be used for interviews will be close up shots, medium and also establishing shots and also the appropriate locations will be thought about and make sure that its appropriate for the interview. For example if a teacher is being interviewed in a school then they will most likely be interviewed in their classroom and this then shows that the locations is appropriate for a teacher. For example  on BBC news if they are interviewing a school pupil then they would interview in a classroom, which shows that they are a student and means that the location is appropriate for the interview. Also on 5 news if a doctor is being interviewed then they will be interviewed in their work place, this then shows that they are a doctor and makes it more obvious. Also interviews shots will be cut to that the interview is appropriate and only the things that the interviewee wants are covered and the whole interview is not shown.
Experts and witness-Experts are used to gather information for a news report, however all the fact will have to be checked and there has to be information that backs up this information. For example if within BBC news they want a doctor then they will have to gather and research and make sure that they have information that, that person is a doctor.  Also within 5 news if they are going to use a social worker then they will need to check and make sure that they gather information that the person is a social worker. Witnesses, witnesses will usually facts that can back their points or they will have actuality footage to back up their points.

Reporter structure- When the news is made up the directors and other people will have to think about a structure for the news. This makes sure that if a story is cut short, then they have back up  stories that they can include in the news that will fill in the gaps and all the story will end up on a good note. BBC news and 5  news are structured in a way that makes sure that everything is included and that everything has been shown in the news and if something goes wrong then they have back up stories that they can show.
Actuality footage- In news reports actuality footage is shown to show that actually happened in a n even, this is used in a way to back up information or to add an insight into the event that occurred. For example in BBC news if they are showing a crime scene then they will show actuality footage that will back up the event that happened.
